Ah, I’m getting obsessed with the idea to recompile all my software to have fewer features. Or maybe not all, but some. Maybe just a few packages, huh! A kernel, a browser, and a GUI file manager. I’m mostly OK with my CLI apps.
I use Arch Linux everywhere. And for using USE flags, I need Gentoo! I have never used it, and it’s too complex… or was too complex. Now, I feel I’m ready, but I have no device to run Gentoo, yet. I have my primary computer, running Arch. But…
I want to have FreeBSD, and I want to have Gentoo. For FreeBSD, I decided I’d buy a used Mac mini of Intel-era. Eyeing a 2010 server model for $30, which is a nice price, considering there are two 500 GB disks in there, and it’s in a working condition. That would work with FreeBSD no problem (and I don’t care about Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, I can ditch them even, or just disable them in software).
I want to have OpenBSD somewhere too. But I have no idea in mind right now, so I’d put it for later.
And for Gentoo… I have no idea where to start. I thought of getting a used (and probably faulty) MacBook Air M1 for that, but I’m holding off on that idea. Better next year. Or, ideally, when that laptop become obsolete.
