Real servers

A few days ago, I impulsively explored tiny bits of real servers (Dell something), and I was impressed how expensive the whole thing is! A used server, is about a thousand euros a for base hardware, sometimes no memory and no disks. Perhaps, that’s just recent development of lack of RAM and SSDs too. The whole thing felt very expensive. I still believe I’m going to buy a lot of real servers one day. I’m dreaming of having a tiny data centre, to serve the local community. Plus some global projects of mine. Websites, backups, media perhaps. I was even calculating how many solar panels I’d need to have to cover for that. I thought of mostly using solar.

I wonder how many years into the future would it take me to have all this. Not just money wise, but also requirement wise. I don’t need much these days, but I’m slowly growing my hardware needs. I’m pretty sure I’d go with tiny efficient machines, like Raspberry Pi, Orange Pi, or alike. Mac mini too. I’m more like a Mac stadium guy, but I still think I’d have a rack or two at some point. I’m really curious when would that happen. Hundreds of thousands in servers, huh.

On the very opposite end, most of my servers are about tens of dollars each, no more. I believe I can cover most of my projects with servers like this. Even some professional projects! What a time to be alive! Many folks of the past were housing complex things on machine much slower than that!
