it’s a way to self-host your website from home, without revealing your home IP address.
Wouldn’t Tor hidden services be better for that?
Hmm, I think I’d like to explore that. Just for the sake of it.
Also:
Have you ever seen a hidden service submitted to lobste.rs?
If they were supported by mainstream browsers then yeah, they would be great for that. I particularly like that since they’re bound to a public key[1], it’s impossible e.g. for a scalper to take over the domain if you stop paying for it. You actually don’t have to pay rent for a domain at all - you can actually own an onion address, unlike normal domains.
[1] Sadly, right now this means you need to have quite a lot of trust in the server you host your website on. It needs access to the private keys, and if someone steals them, they can impersonate you - and AFAIK they aren’t revocable. The protocol does support offline keys, but tor doesn’t yet support them on the server side (tor#29054, not sure about Arti).
That being said I don’t think I’ve heard of this being an actual issue for someone.
Also:
One of the issues I have with discussions about Cloudflare is that Cloudflare has been good at cultivating a following with certain technical types to the point where it could be said that they have a small army of defenders.
Try to discuss the kinds of things in this post on Reddit or on the orange site, and more often than not things will quickly devolve in to emotional exchanges with downvotes that have nothing to do with engaging or facts. What’s the point in having discussions if fans who don’t care about facts can simply downvote discussions until they’re not seen? I don’t value popularity contests — I like facts.
Add to this that Cloudflare seem to use certain sites for marketing purposes, and a great case can be made for avoiding those certain sites in favor of ones where actual discussion matters more than fanboying over a wanna-be monopoly.
That’s not to say that it doesn’t happen here — I’ve played around with it here — but it happens a lot less. Thank you, lobste.rs people :)
