Oh Debian, Debian, Debian. The system I cannot like, since the early days. It’s just the worst for me.
Random people on the internet aren’t fans either:
From my experience in anger, it’s only really Debian (and for very different reasons, Windows, of course). Arch, Fedora, etc. don’t seem to have this much random breakage version to version that is ignored and NOTABUGged.
And then as the reply:
That’s because everyone else ships the software more or less as released and tested upstream. Debian messes with EVERYTHING, splits it all up, then has to do their own testing. It’s their packaging philosophy, it’s intentional, and it creates a lot of work for sysadmins. They do it in the name of ultimate system control but if that’s what you’re after you can probably get a better product out of arch or something without the constant breakage and hair-brained defaults.
I guess it’s hare-brained1, and I’m agree so much here!
And the first commenter replies:
Yeah if one is after ultimate control then they should probably use, in this particular order, Guix SD, NixOS, Gentoo, Void, Arch. I’m just fine with Arch for my home messing around server, and RHEL at work. I just don’t get what’s the appeal of ubuntu/debian for pet servers.
Me, I am experienced with Arch for 6 years now, using it daily. And Debian for maybe 15…17 years, using it on and off, and it was the worst all the time. It’s only advantage was that for some mysterious to me reason, it supports some obscure hardware, like my Orange Pi Zeros. I’d love to have Arch there, or even FreeBSD, but there are no options like that.
Aha, okay, those are synonyms. I just never seen the hair version. ↩︎
